Note: Manufacturers Bradford White, some State and A/O Smith, have the the anode attached to the hot outlet nipple. To adapt the Model AR-148 power anode, a 3/4″ brass tee and 3/4″ plastic lined nipple of sufficient length to extend past the thickness of insulation will be required. Most gas heaters will require a 3″ long nipple and on electric water heaters MFG after April of 2015 a 6″ long nipple is required.
Use Kit TA-15
Model AR-148 powered anode when installed to replace the existing hex head anode may require a longer nipple and brass coupler to clear the insulation to complete the install. Use kit EA-16.
The AR-149 Powered Anode replaces the hex head anode only on 40-60 gallon capacity tanks and the AR-150 replaces the hex head anode ONLY on 10-30 gallon capacity tanks. The Corro-Protec anode manufactured with a 3″ long nipple is easily installed on most gas and electric water heaters.
NOTE: On some electrical water heaters manufactured after April of 2015 the insulation thickness can exceed 3 inches. In that case the model AR-149 or 150 will have to be substituted with the AR-148 using an extension adapter EA-16 for this conversion.
The impressed current anode system has a life many times that of the sacrificial anodes even in highly corrosive water. Their safe putting out a barely measurable voltage.
Where long term economics are a concern, use of a softener or area where well water can produce exceessive sulfides(that rotten egg smell), power anodes may be the best choice. they include a transformer with a 6 foot lead.
